Our judgments are going on all the time. People are good, bad, sexy, dull, rich, poor. Life is fair, unfair, exciting, tedious, joyful, woeful. But what are all these things if we take the judgment out? Do they cease to exist? Or do they assume a completely different identity?
Is The Breaking of the Shell going well, or going badly? Who makes the judgment and what does the judgment mean anyway? If someone tells me they hate it does that mean it’s going badly? If someone tells me they love it, does that mean it’s going well? If 100,000 people buy it does that mean it’s good and I really should ‘believe’ in it?
As an artist it is easy to get swayed by judgment. I guess the important thing is to find one’s own centre in the creative process; the place where you can celebrate the process of creation, knowing that whatever happens beyond that is simply another story starting to tell itself. Some of those stories we might like, others we may struggle with.
So life’s great; life’s crap; or life’s, well, just life. How I view it doesn’t change the fact that it is what it is…
